Google is starting to roll out another wave of Play Services updates to Android users that include a number of issues.
The company detailed its latest set of patch notes on its Systems page (via 9to5Google ). Google has started rolling out the version 24.24 of its Play Services, which brings a whole new set of benefits to app developers. The notes note that there are some “new features” coming for Google and other developers who create apps that can be retrieved from Wallet.
These users must find new support for digital wallets and payment-related processes within their applications. Google is also fixing some security and privacy issues for users on PCs, mobiles and smart TVs.
Google Play Store version 41.5 aims to provide “enhanced protection” from Play Protect when users install apps.
Some other system updates for June are as follows:
- With this new security feature, you’ll be able to set a lost or stolen device to lock automatically after it loses connection (Phones).
- With this new feature, you can now use USB and Wi-Fi at the same time to backup and restore your device during setup (Phones).
- New developer features for Google and third-party app developers to support Maps-related processes in their apps (App Developers).
- New developer features for Google and third-party app developers to support account management-related processes in their apps (App Developers).
For Device Health, Google released a fix that includes optimizations for Android’s Adaptive Battery feature. Additional bug fixes for device unlocks have also arrived in June.
Google’s listed addition of “automatic lock” for a lost or stolen device apparently refers to “Offline device lock.” The company detailed the upcoming feature during I/O 2024, stating that it would help users with devices on its Find My Device network. If a device goes offline for a long time, it will automatically lock to protect your data.
Additionally, if a malicious person fails multiple login attempts, your phone will be locked.
What’s unclear is whether Google’s listed use of USB and WiFi for data transfer refers to what was revealed in May. The company’s Data Restore Tool app gave some glimpses into this new method of speeding up data transfers. Basically, users should be able to restore the data of an old phone without the need for a factory reset.
Google’s June updates to its services should download and install automatically as we finish the week. In other news, Pixel phones received a June patch with many fixes for stability, battery, charging and camera issues.
